چکیده

A computational model of the peripheral auditory system is used to explain the paradoxical observation that discriminating between broadband noise sounds with and without high-frequency spectral notches is more difficult at mid-intensities than at lower or higher intensities [A. Alves-Pinto, E.A. Lopez-Poveda, Detection of high-frequency spectral notches as a function of level, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 118 (2005) 2485–2469.]. The simulations suggest that the discrimination task in question relies on comparing the timing of auditory nerve spikes, hence that high-frequency sounds are represented in the auditory nerve by a time code. They further suggest that the improvement in spectral discrimination at high intensities is associated with inherent inner hair cell nonlinearities. r 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Psychophysical assessment of the level-dependent representation of high-frequency spectral notches in the peripheral auditory system.

To discriminate between broadband noises with and without a high-frequency spectral notch is more difficult at 70-80 dB sound pressure level than at lower or higher levels [Alves-Pinto, A. and Lopez-Poveda, E. A. (2005). "Detection of high-frequency spectral notches as a function of level," J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 118, 2458-2469]. One possible explanation is that the notch is less clearly represent...

Perception and coding of high-frequency spectral notches: potential implications for sound localization

The interaction of sound waves with the human pinna introduces high-frequency notches (5-10 kHz) in the stimulus spectrum that are thought to be useful for vertical sound localization. A common view is that these notches are encoded as rate profiles in the auditory nerve (AN). Here, we review previously published psychoacoustical evidence in humans and computer-model simulations of inner hair c...

Time-variant spectral peak and notch detection in echolocation-call sequences in bats.

Bats are able to recognize and discriminate three-dimensional objects in complete darkness by analyzing the echoes of their ultrasonic emissions. Bats typically ensonify objects from different aspects to gain an internal representation of the three-dimensional object shape. Previous work suggests that, as a result, bats rely on the echo-acoustic analysis of spectral peaks and notches. Dependent...

IMPLEMENTATION OF EXTENDED KALMAN FILTER TO REDUCE NON CYCLO-STATIONARY NOISE IN AERIAL GAMMA RAY SURVEY

Gamma-ray detection has an important role in the enhancement the nuclear safety and provides a proper environment for applications of nuclear radiation. To reduce the risk of exposure, aerial gamma survey is commonly used as an advantage of the distance between the detection system and the radiation sources. One of the most important issues in aerial gamma survey is the detection noise. Various...

Synchrosqueezing-based Transform and its Application in Seismic Data Analysis

Seismic waves are non-stationary due to its propagation through the earth. Time-frequency transforms are suitable tools for analyzing non-stationary seismic signals. Spectral decomposition can reveal the non-stationary characteristics which cannot be easily observed in the time or frequency representation alone. Various types of spectral decomposition methods have been introduced by some resear...
